Today is our son’s first birthday! What’s better than walking in redwoods forests for your first birthday? We were very excited and we were not disappointed. We left Crescent City in the morning and drove to Fern Canyon for a first walk. We drove through dense forests and then entered the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park on the coast. We saw a herd of Elks walking along the road. We then hiked in the Fern Canyon named for the ferns growing on the 50-foot high walls, through which runs Home Creek. It is also famous for being one of the film location for Jurassic Park 2. Most of the trail is wet and rain boots are more than necessary. We didn’t have any so we tried to walk on rocks and trunks as much as we could with more or less success. We then drove to some random parts of the gigantic and incredible Redwoods National Park. The coastal redwood is an evergreen, long-lived tree living 1,200–1,800 years or more. This species includes the tallest living trees on Earth, reaching up to 379 feet (115.5 m) in height (without the roots) and up to 29.2 feet (8.9 m) in diameter at breast height. These trees are also among the oldest living things on Earth (Thanks again Wikipedia). The atmosphere is incredible and magical. This is one of the most amazing place we have visited. We then headed to our Airbnb in Arcata. It was another great day full of amazing memories.
